Bing and Copilot visibility for car dealerships
Find out whether the missing step is discovery, indexing, or selection in an AI answer.
Why is Copilot not mentioning my dealership?
Start by checking whether Bing has indexed the exact page you want Copilot to use. A submitted sitemap, an accessible website and an indexed page are different states. Even an indexed page still needs to be relevant to the shopper’s question.
For a US dealership, work through three questions: can Bing retrieve the page, does the page answer this request, and do the cited sources agree about the store and its inventory? Dealer Handshake helps with inventory readability and supported agent connections. Search inclusion is controlled by the search provider.
This guide concerns public Bing and Copilot discovery. It does not announce a native Dealer Handshake Copilot connector. For connected shopping, check the assistant capability table.
Check the exact URL in Bing Webmaster Tools
Inspect your homepage, one current vehicle detail page, your inventory search page and the relevant service or location page. Use your verified site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Check the canonical URL, including its hostname and trailing slash.
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| URL is unknown | Add a normal HTML link from a relevant indexed page. Include the canonical URL in the XML sitemap and notify Bing of the new page. |
| Discovered but not crawled | Run Live URL. If it succeeds, review useful content, internal links and competing duplicate URLs, then request indexing. Discovery alone does not show that Bing read the page. |
| Live URL cannot be fetched | Investigate the reported HTTP response, robots rules, login requirements or CDN challenge. Have the website team verify real Bingbot access in server logs. |
| Indexed successfully | Move to question relevance and answer testing. Repeated submission does not guarantee a citation. |
A successful live test demonstrates current access. It does not override the index status. Keep both results and their dates. A website readability scan complements these checks; it cannot tell you whether Bing has selected your URL for its index.
Make current inventory easy to retrieve
- Vehicle facts: expose the VIN, year, make, model, trim, price, mileage and availability as readable page content. Keep visible facts and structured data consistent.
- Freshness: record when inventory was updated and remove sold stock from available inventory. Do not change page dates just to look fresh.
- Discovery: link to useful inventory and dealer pages from the site. Keep a canonical XML sitemap with honest modification dates.
- Updates: use IndexNow to notify participating search engines when public URLs change. An accepted notification is not proof of indexing.
Verify ten actual vehicles, including a sold or unavailable example, with the ten-VIN inventory test. If your public pages cannot reliably expose current stock, discuss a supported inventory feed connection alongside the website fixes.
Our 29-day inventory crawler study documents requests to Car Handshake’s public inventory routes. Those requests show retrieval activity, not customer visits or AI recommendations.
Give Copilot useful dealership information to cite
Answer the specific question on a page that can stand on its own. A used-truck shopper needs current stock, price, mileage and location. A service shopper needs the work you actually offer, relevant vehicle makes, hours and a way to arrange an appointment.
Keep the dealership’s name, address, phone and department details consistent across its own site and legitimate business profiles, including Bing Places. Correct inaccurate third-party information where you can. Genuine dealer experience, clear policies and documented examples give a source more substance than a list of AI keywords.
For a dealer comparing vendors, publish the actual scope: what is connected, what the scanner checks, who fixes the website and how a lead reaches the CRM. Use our provider comparison to ask each vendor for the same evidence.
Measure citations separately from clicks and leads
Microsoft’s AI Performance report shows citation counts, cited pages and a sample of grounding queries across supported Microsoft and partner experiences. These metrics do not tell you your position in an answer or whether a customer contacted you.
On October 13, 2026, Microsoft announced Topics Portfolio, including topic-level opportunity queries. It appears only when sufficient data is available. A missing tab is not evidence of a technical site error.
- Record a baseline for indexed URLs, citations, search clicks, identifiable AI referrals and accepted inquiries.
- Test the same questions in fresh Copilot conversations. Record the date, location context, exact question and source URLs.
- Count store mentions, your own site’s citations and accurate vehicle answers separately.
- Follow up after indexing and after meaningful content updates. Compare similar periods, not a single favorable answer.
Use the dealer question set to separate shoppers finding a dealership from dealers choosing an AI vendor. Both matter, but they measure different audiences.
What Dealer Handshake can help you check
Start with a free inventory readability scan. Bring the findings to your website team. Then test your actual inventory in the intended supported assistant and verify the shopper-approved inquiry in your CRM.
Dealer Handshake comes from the team that created Auto Agent Protocol. The managed service and the independently published standard are separate. A connection can support inventory questions and contact; it does not buy a place in Copilot’s organic answers.
Dealer questions
Does IndexNow guarantee a Copilot citation?
No. IndexNow notifies participating search engines of changed URLs. Crawling, indexing and selection as a source are separate decisions.
Why can Bing open my page but still show discovered but not crawled?
The live test checks whether the page can be fetched now. The index report describes Bing’s stored state. Review content, canonical URLs and internal discovery, then request indexing and check again later.
Does a zero in Bing AI Performance mean no AI assistant has used our site?
No. The report covers supported Microsoft and partner experiences, not every conversation across all assistants. Check other platforms and identifiable referral visits separately.
Does Dealer Handshake guarantee first position in Bing or Copilot?
No. Dealer Handshake offers inventory readability checks and managed connections for supported assistants. Bing and Copilot control their own indexing, source selection and recommendations.
